The Holsten Brauerei was founded in Altona, Hamburg in 1878 and steadily took over and acquired numerous other breweries around the Hamburg and Niedersaxon areas in the following years. The major breweries that now operate under the Holsten Group are the Brauerei Feldschlößchen in Brunswick, the Mecklenburgische Brauerei Lübz GmbH, in Lübz and The Landskron Brewery in Görlitz. A majority shareholding in Holsten itself was acquired by Carlsberg in 2004.
