Löwenbräu has a long history dating back to 1383 when it was first brewed at
"Zum Löwen" (The Lion's Inn) by an innkeeper. Löwenbräu has been served at every
Oktoberfest in Munich since 1810 and is one of only six breweries permitted to
serve beer at the festival. In 1818 George Brey, a farmer's son from Aidling,
bought "Zum Löwen" and started to develop the Löwenbräu business. Löwenbräu
moved to Munich in 1851 and there built a state of the art brewery. The
Löwenbräu brewery was almost completely destroyed during World War II and was
rebuilt with the latest technologies. Löwenbräu started exporting to England and
the US in 1974 and in 1977 Löwenbräu became the leading import in the United
states. In1997, Löwenbräu and
Spaten, two of the
major Munich based breweries decided to merge to form the Spaten-Löwenbräu
Group, which in turn falls under the massive global umbrella of drinks giant
InBev.
