New Zealand Breweries was formed in 1923 when 10 leading breweries merged to form a major brewing force in New Zealand. One of those breweries was Lion. In 1977 the northern division of New Zealand Breweries was renamed as Lion Breweries. In 1988 after a merger with LD Nathan & Co the brewery was renamed as Lion Nathan although it wasn't until 1997 that the whole of New Zealand Breweries adopted the name Lion Breweries. Lion Nathan has taken over many other breweries located in the Southern Hemisphere including Swan, Tooheys and Castlemaine Perkins.
