Newcastle Breweries Ltd

Location: Newcastle upon Tyne, England
Website:
The Newcastle Breweries Ltd were formed when several
breweries based in the North East of England joined in 1890. They included the
John Barras brewery of Gateshead, who had recently taken over the Tyne Brewery.
Their most famous product, Newcastle Brown Ale was first brewed by Jim Porter in
1927. In the 1950's they took over some more North Eastern breweries including
Northern Corporation (1955), the Duddingston Brewery (from Steel, Coulson & Co.
Ltd. in 1954), James Deuchar Ltd. (1956), and
John Rowell & Son Ltd. (1959). In 1960 Newcastle Breweries merged with Scottish Brewers, Youngers and
McEwan to form the drink giant
Scottish and Newcastle.
