Brasserie d'Orval

Location:         Villers-devant-Orval, Belgium

Website:          Orval

Brasserie d'Orval or the Orval Brewery is found within the walls of the Abbaye Notre-Dame d'Orval monastery which is located in the Gaume region of Belgium. The history of the brewery goes back to at least 1628 although the modern brewery was built in the 1930's. The trout and ring logo derives from a legend about the abbey, Mathilda of Tuscany was visiting the site, when she lost her wedding ring in a spring. After praying for the return of the ring, a trout appeared on the surface of the water with the ring in its mouth. She exclaimed "Truly this place is a Val d'Or", from which the name "Orval" is derived, and in gratitude made available the funds for the foundation of the monastery here. The spring still supplies water to the monastery and its brewery.
