The Paulaner brewery takes it name from the fiars of the order of Saint Francis of Paola who had been brewing beer in Munich since 1634. The brewery was taken over by Franz Xaver Zacherl and in 1928 it was merged with Gebrüder Thomas brewery creating Paulaner Salvator Thomas Bräu. In 1994 Paulaner took over Kulmbacher and is also the parent company of Auer Bräu AG in Rosenheim. The company is current owned by the Brau Holding International AG, nearly 50% of which is owned by Heineken.
