Redruth Brewery

Location:         Redruth, Cornwall, England

Website:          Entry for Redruth in the Directory of UK Real Ale Breweries

The Redruth Brewery seems to be one of those puzzling establishments that has existed under more than one name. It was also known as the Devenish Brewery and has had a chequered live being closed and subsequently reopened on more than one occasion. It is currently closed having gone into liquidation in 2004.

Remarks: W & E.C. Carne was a ship broker's and suppliers of wine, corn and rope and the like to the maritime interests of Falmouth. That's probably where the 1756 comes from. It seems the brewery was started some time in the late 19th century, and eventually got taken over by the J.A. Devenish Brewery of Redruth in 1921. Brewing at Carne's premises
stopped 5 years later. Devenish remembered its existence during the 1980s (100th anniversary, maybe?) with a keg beer called Carne's Falmouth Bitter.

This information gratefully received from Rod Davis of the Cornwall branch of CAMRA.
