Brauerei Rhenania Robert Wirichs GmbH & Co. KG

Location:          Krefeld, Germany

Website:           Rhenania Alt Website

The Rhenania brewery was founded in 1838 by Hermann Josef Wirichs and the brewery was established in the hands of the Wirichs family for many years. In the early part of the 20th century they took over other breweries like the Krefeld Union Brauerei in 1916 and the Thomas Brauerei Peter Schmitz in Kempten in 1919. After the second world war the brewery had a downturn in fortunes with the Rhenania portfolio every decreasing until only their Alt beer was being produced. The brewery eventually closed in 2002. Since then the Krombacher brewery has obtained the rights to the Rhenania Alt name and has started reproducing this beer once again.
