Opened in Manila in 1890 by Enrique Barretto y de Ycaza, La Fábrica de Cerveza de San Miguel was Southeast Asia's first brewery.In 1953 under the "Manila Agreement" an independent brewing subsidiary called La Segarra was set up to brew under the San Miguel brandname. This later changed its name to San Miguel, Fábricas de Cerveza y Malta, S.A. and was eventually purchased by the Spanish brewer Mahou in 2000
