Scottish & Newcastle was formed from a 1960 merger between
the Youngers and McEwan breweries and Newcastle breweries. It has continued to
buy up other British brewers like Theakstons and Courage. It now has a portfolio
that includes the Kronenbourg,
Foster's, & John Smith's brands.
In 2008 S&N was bought out by the brewing giants of
Carlsberg and Heineken. Carlsberg got S&N's
interests in France, Russia and the Baltic whilst Heineken now controls all of
S&N's British interests.

Remarks: Hofmeister was the archetypal British attempt at a sophisticated continental lager that was in much demand in the 70's and 80's. Brewed by Scottish and Newcastle is has now been resigned to the scrap heap in 2003 along with long time advertising buddy George "Follow the Bear".
It's probably stretching a point to
describe Hofmeister as a Scottish beer as it was brewed in S&N's
Reading brewery (formerly Courage) - Still no less a crime than
trying to pass it off as a continental beer. |

Apparently Gillespie's Malt Stout was the first beer to be rated

Oxford Bottled Beer Database. |
