Smithwick's is the common name for the St Francis abbey Brewery in the city of Kilkenny. It was founded in 1710 by Franciscan Monks and the name Smithwicks came from John Smithwick who leased the land close the abbey. In 1827 Edmond Smithwick purchased the brewery and registered the name as E. Smithwick & Sons Ltd in 1899. It changed its name to "Time" in 1960 but 5 years later saw itself having to join Irish Ale Breweries. Subsequently it was bought out by Guinness from Irish Ale Breweries and it is now looked after under the Diageo drinks group umbrella.
