William Stone founded his brewery in Sheffield and introduced its flagship brew, Stones Bitter, in the 1940s. The brewery was taken over by Bass in 1968 but continued to be brewed in Sheffield until the brewery was closed in 1999. The trademark is now under the ownership of the Coors brewing group.
