Established in 1857 on the banks of the Swan River in Perth by English immigrant Frederick Sherwood, the Swan Brewery has passed through many different hands since the death of the founder in 1874. The brewery has seen it take over the neighbouring Lion Brewery, Freemantle's Castlemaine Brewery, the Emu Brewery and finally in 1945 the Kalgoorlie Brewing Co. In 1981 the brewery was in the hands of the Australian businessman Alan Bond before being taken over by the drinks groups Lion Nathan.
