T&R Theakston Ltd or Theakstons to give it its more well known named was founded in the town of Masham in 1827 by Robert Theakston and John Wood. By 1832 the brewery was in the sole hands of Robert Theakston and control had passed to his son Thomas by 1875. Theakston itself took over two breweries, The Lightfoot Brewery in 1919 and in 1974 the Carlisle State Management Brewery. In 1984 the company was taken over by Blackburn based Matthew Brown Plc which in turn was bought out in 1987 by Scottish & Newcastle. In a return of fortunes it was brought back into family ownership when four Theakston brothers took it back over in 2004.
