United Breweries was founded in 1857 by a Scot, Thomas
Leishman. It initially made its fortune selling beer to the British troops
stationed in India but nowadays the company has branched out into wines and
spirits as well as pharmaceuticals and even owns the Kingfisher domestic Indian
airlines.
