Boasting the title of the oldest brewery in the world, the Benedictine Monastery was founded in the year 725 in the town of Weihenstephan and brewing was an activity happening from this date onwards. In 1040 however beer brewing officially began when Abbot Arnold secured a licence to brew and sell beer. The brewery adopted the name Bavarian State Brewery Weihenstephan in 1923. It is considered the "university of Brewing" as one of the University for Agriculture and Brewing's campuses is located in Weihenstephan.
