Initially founded in 1742 by Samuel Whitbread and Thomas Shewell they took up residence in a brewery on Chiswell Street in London in 1750. The company went from strength to strength merging and taking over other breweries, restaurant chains and drink industry businesses. It acquired Boddingtons in 1989. In 2000 to 2001 it sold off its complete beer company to Interbrew and then sold off its public houses and bars also and now concentrates on leisure and hotel type businesses, for example the Whitbread company now owns Premier Lodge, Costa Coffee shops and Cannons Health & Fitness centres. It's modern day headquarters are located in Luton, although no longer used for brewing the property on Chiswell Street is still owned by the company and is used for corporate uses.
