CLIPPING YOUR BIRDS NAILS

The members of the lonchura family have a tendancy to excessive growth of their nails in captivity see my example above, the maintanance of the nails is extremely important both to avoid accidents and to ensure successful mating
I advise the use of the clippers as illustrated above they have always proved ideal for clipping nails cleanly. You must avoid when clipping the Blood Vessel that runs down the nails, this is easily seen by holding the nail up to a light source in most light coloured nails but can be impossible with species with dark coloured nails, here experience and in part guess work is your only guide to how short the nail should normally be. If you do manage to cut this vessel I always light a match ,blow it out & immediately apply it to the end of the nail 9 times out of 10 this will stop any bleeding. other than this if the bleeding is bad a drop of "super glue" on the tip of nail has always worked for me. It seems a daunting task when attempted for the first time if you doubt your ability to clip your birds nails find someone who has experience, as your nervousness can cause you to make mistakes and also cause your birds unnecessary distress.
