‘There are known knowns – things which we know we know, known unknowns - things which we know we know we don’t know, and unknown unknowns, things which we don’t know that we don’t know.’
Donald Rumsfeld
The Known Unknowns have been described as “leviathans with piercing guitars, jerky vocals and demonic bass lines” (Gigwise) and write spiky distinctive and inventive songs about misinformation, drinking, kerb-crawlers, jargon, singer-songwriters, ambulance chasers, hyperbole, why being in a band is rubbish and vacuum cleaning.
Their music has been compared to T-Rex, Bloc Party, the Fall, Joy Division and, although the Lord alone knows why, Metallica. In any case, the band strives to make guitar music where creativity isn’t confined to finding the right band to steal from and matching it with the right jacket.
Recent gigs include ‘Sounds XP presents’ at the Purple Turtle with Theoretical Girl, the Bridge Gang and Pete and the Pirates, Upstairs at the Garage with Rolling Dog, The Dublin Castle, the Buffalo Bar and Cornbury Festival and the band have received enough support to be asked back to all of these prestigious venues. Forthcoming dates include Dublin Castle, Islington Academy and the Fighting Cocks in Kingston.
Their first demo was recorded at J Studios in Hackney (previous guests include Bloc Party and Mystery Jets) during February 2005 and received some great reviews. Suitably encouraged, they returned a year later to record another three songs, which are available to download from this very website.
The Known Unknowns:
Neil Walsh – guitar, vocals, sandpaper, kazoo, rubbish ideas for percussion.
Peter “pops” Williams – guitar, pipe, slippers, tartan rug, mug of Horlicks, five a day.
Dave ‘the wolfman’ Taylor – drums, broken limbs, unfathomable attachment to warm cans of Strongbow.
