BACKGROUND
Muriel is 25 years old and is an ambulance driver in the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry (FANY; yes, she's heard all the jokes), currently stationed in Belgium near where the city of Ypres used to be before the Great War happened to it. She's a former typist, from a pleasantly middle class family in Hertfordshire.
She's spent the last year right at or just behind the front lines, usually living in very primitive conditions, and has seen more than enough blood, guts, shelling and death. As well as driving the ambulance. she's done pretty much everything a soldier might be expected to do apart from actually fighting - she's done her fair share of digging, carrying ammunition and even going out into No Man's Land to fetch casualties back.
Thanks to all that physical labour, Muriel is fit and healthy. She's had basic medical and military training and has had to be a dab hand at everything from keeping the ambulance running to talking supply clerks into handing over medical supplies. She's strong-willed, observant and brave, though her experiences in the last year have worn her down a bit. It seemed like it was going to be such a grand adventure, but...
