ANTI-YEAST THERAPY.
There may possibly be a link between Candida Albicans and Autism, plus other learning disabilities, however, this is debateable in the medical community. Candida is a yeast-like fungus which is normally in the body. There may be an overgrowth of Candida in some children with Autism resulting to intestinal problems.

AUTISM, AN AUTOIMMUNE DISORDER/? THIMEROSAL CAUSES AUTOIMMUNE REACTION - BREAKING NEWS - AUTISM RESEARCH INTERNATIONAL, VOL. 18, #1, 2004.
Growing evidence points to autoimmune processes, in which the body attacks its own cells, as a factor in Autism. Among the findings is a new study by Vijendra Singh and Wyatt Rivas, who evaluated 68 Autistic children and 30 controls and found that the Autistic children but not the controls had anti-bodies to caudate nucleus, cerebral cortex, and cerebellum.
"Since a significant number of Autistic children had antibodies to caudate nucleus, they say, "we propose that an autoimmune reaction to this brain region may cause neurological impairments in Autistic children. Thus, the caudate nucleus might be involved in the neurobiology of Autism".

THIMEROSAL CAUSES AUTOIMMUNE REACTION.
A new study from Sweden shows that the vaccine preservative thimerosal can provoke an autoimmune response.
S. Havarinasab and colleagues exposed genetically vulnerable mice to drinking water contaminated with thimerosal for 70 days. They found that "thimerosal induces in gaenetically susceptible mice a systemic autoimmune syndrome very similar to that seen after treatment with inorganic mercury," although a larger does of thimerosal than methylmercury is needed to trigger this effect.

CELL THERAPY.
This therapy consists of injections, usually in the large muscle of the rear end. The world's leading researcher was Dr. Franz Schmidt who has used this therapy in Germany for many years for the treatment of Downs Syndrome.
Dr. med. Gerhard Heinstein is now continuing Dr. Schmidt's work. Cell therapy is also used in Russia and Israel. The controversial cell therapy used in Russia involves using live human foetal tissue, but Dr. Heinstein uses tissue from sheep foetuses. In the U.K. and North America Cell Therapy is partly regarded with suspicion.

HIGASHI (DAILY LIFE EDUCATIONAL THERAPY).
The Higashi (Daily Life Educational Therapy) is based upon the world renowned tenets of Daily Life Therapy developed by the late Kiyo Kitahara of Tokyo, Japan. Dr. Kiyo Kitahara's method provides children with systematic education through group dynamics, the intermingling of academics and technology, art, music and physical education. The goal of this educational approach is for individuals to achieve social independence and dignity, and to benefit from and contribute to society.

HOLDING THERAPY.
This therapy received a great deal of attention in the late 1970's. Some people claim good results, as others disagree with the therapy's intrusive nature. The parent attempts to hold the child for periods of time, even if the child fights against the mother's embrace. The child sits face to face with the mother who tries to attain an eye-to-eye contact, remaining calm, trying to speak and comfort the distressed child.

THE OPTION (SON RISE) PROGRAM
This modality for children with Autism was created by Barry Neil and Samahria Kaufman. In the book, 'Son-Rise', Barry Kaufman describes his son exhibiting many characteristics of Autism and retardation. Although his son was diagnosed at 18 months old by psychiatrists and developmental professionals, Barry Neil and Samahria Kaufman went ahead with their therapy of joining in with their son's repetitive and ritualistic behaviour, teaching through interactive play etc. which enabled their son, Raun, to imerge out of Autism.

PECS (PICTURE EXCHANGE COMMUNICATION SYSTEM).
Children with Autism, especially very young children, often have great difficulty using language to express themselves. PECS was developed at the Delaware Autistic Programme in response to their difficulty over many years of trying a variety of communication programmes.
Training in PECS begins by finding out what things a child is attracted to, i.e. food, toys, games and favourite items such as smoothers/blankets. A picture is made up or a photograph taken of the item. The item is then moved to a place where the child can see it (a high shelf) but cannot reach it. When the child wants the item they are encouraged to take the picture to another person who will take the picture from them and in return for which give the child the item shown on the picture. Thus a two-way communication is made. The PECS system is then added to until the child not only has a book full of items they can request, but also sentence structure for requesting such items.
There are two main advantages to PECS, one, it shows the child that another person is required to communicate their needs to and secondly gives the child the name of the items so as to help develop comprehension and language. Many parents feel that if their non-verbal child were to be given pictures to communicate they would be less likely to speak, however, PECS gives a child the names of items and the reason to communicate and can not only reduce frustration in a child but often result in the child developing verbal language.

SECRETIN.
The use of secretin for the treatment of Autism was previously hyped up as a wonder hormone and possible cure for Autism.
Secretin is a polypeptide hormone involved in the regulation of gastric function. It is prepared from the duodenal mucosa of pigs. Following administration by intravenous injection, it causes an increase in the secretion of the pancreas of water and bicarbonate into the duodenum. It is used alone or in conjunction with pancreozymin or cholecystokinetic agents as a test for exocrine pancreatic function, and in the diagnosis of biliary-tract disorders.

www.osiris.sunderland.ac.uk/autism/sec.htm.
On 5th January, 2004, released the long-awaited preliminary results of Repligen's Phase III study of secretin efficacy in Autism. To the surprise and dismay of many, the results, though incomplete, were reported by Repligen's Walter Herlihy as negative. The negative report contrasted sharply with a great deal of very positive earlier data, and with Herlihy's previously expressed enthusiasm for secretin.

SPEECH AND LANGUAGE.
Speech and Language does not simply consists of meaningless words and sentences, but needs to be symbolic. E.G. if the child is given a toy car or any toy vehicle, such as a toy train, he/she rolls it along the floor or table WITHOUT HAVING BEEN SHOWN INITIALLY, this is very important, then he/she can symbolize the toy with the real size object which means that language is developing; but if the child turns the toy vehicle upside down and repeatedly spins the wheels, then there is no sign of language emerging. Non-disabled children cease to do this before the age of two years.(Yudkin, verbal information, 1967).
In order to obtain meaningful language, play therapy is encouraged, i.e. symbolic play needs to be shown to the child, e.g. drinking out of a toy cup, also out of a real cup etc.
Once symbolizing objects has been achieved, i.e. Inner Language achieved, the next step is to endeavour to achieve Outer Language.
The Founder of The International Autistic Research Organisation tried to coax her seven year old son with Autism to speak the words he knew but could not say them. Her method consists of 13 stages and from stage 4 is entirely her own work.
After body, facial, mouth movements; e.g. opening and closing mouth like a fish, noises, then sounds corresponding to mouth movements imitations, she moved on to imitation of the first sounds of the alphabet. The 's' was shown by the therapist by placing her finger on to her upper front teeth. Her son followed this and repeated the 's'.
This method is similar to an approach used for the deaf. Lip reading helped with eye-to-eye contact. Originally, she and her husband, first thought their son may be deaf, and interestingly, although the trainee was not deaf, this possibly useful approach for the deaf, worked! Another interesting point: As the therapist can speak four languages, she used sounds from these languages whenever the trainee had difficulties. E.G. The words, 'orange and train' were pronounced with a French accent, 'walk', with a German accent and the word 'telephone' with a Czech accent and, of course, other words with accents from these languages.

TEACCH.
TEACCH is an acronym and stands for Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communication Handicapped Children.
It is an approach developed by the University of North Carolina over the last 30 years, which focuses on the development of appropriate communication skills and personal autonomy. That is to say the major feature of the TEACCH approach is structure. Schopler et al (1971) showed that children with Autism learn better in a structured learning environment. In short TEACH is a method of giving an individual a visual (with the aid of pictures/words) help to structure their day. Visual timetables give individuals security in knowing what is happening next, as well as guidance as to what they should be doing next. Inherent in the TEACCH approach is the notion of progression towards independence. The desired outcome is for each student to be able to use the system, which fit his or her own style of functioning as independently as possible.
Many shools and teaching professionals have been using TEACCH for many years with great success.
