A review:

Old King's Head 4/8/2007

Just Another Rock and Roll Night?

The scene a not so - but trying to be sleazy bar on the Holloway Road North London, strangely empty for a Saturday night but that wasn’t gonna stop these guys they meant business…..The Rock and Roll Business!

Some last minute discussions with the management ensured that a good time could be had by the few lucky punters that had turned up, hell this wasn’t entertainment this was a public service. First song up an instrumental that showed the style these boys were about – borrowed by trendy Art house directors no doubt for TV adverts and the like this type of song belonged to this sort of establishment, raw and uncompromising in its entity. The singer seemed to have a fixation with dead people and their music, the role call of honour from the legions of hero’s from the not too distant past. All the classic’s were there, even “Brown Eyed Girl”, which got the Rock treatment, the songs subtle passages punctured with staccato slash’s from that Gibson that was the lead mans insignia of good time Rock and Roll.

The other guitarist Paul looked like a Wizard working his magic creating the raw edge to the songs that the rhythm section were plying time after time. The drums pounding away gave the bass somewhere to hang those deep riffs and accidentals on. The four of them locked in an orgy of song and devilment. Heck what were these guys conjuring up?

Chinese Rocks - the singer spat the words out like they were red-hot coals, the song enveloping the audience like a python seeking it’s prey, wrapping itself round the very walls of this venue- wall to wall Rock and Roll!

Elvis was still popular in Spain or at least a group of dark and dusky females thought so as they jived around throwing caution to the wind, swaying and grinding to the familiar beat that the King had put down too many years ago.

More songs followed, the pace building to a crescendo before a well earned break.

The second set and the lead axe man swung into action on another classic but not before taking some in-flight refuelling from a Newcastle Brown Ale bottle!

“Can’t get enough” yep that was in there as well, another dead person reference was given out! The hits and standards kept coming including such from the Pistols, Flaming Groovies – yeah we were shaking some action alright now.

I had to leave before the heady mix of Newcastle’s finest and maximum entertainment got the better of me- outside the road was empty, could have had tumble weed it looked that desolate did people know what they were missing…………
