Paphos
Paphos is included on the UNESCO World Heritage list. At the
Kato Paphos Archaeological Park there are remains from prehistoric
times through to the middle ages. This area is next to Paphos
Harbour and contains the Basilica of Khrysopolitissa dating from
4th/7th century AD, the mosaics of the Houses of Aion, Dionysus,
Orpheus and Theseus, the Odeon (shown opposite) dating 1st century
AD, Agora (market place) dating from 2nd century AD and the remains
of the old ancient walls of Paphos.

| At
the harbour mouth is the medieval Castle of Paphos. Slightly further
along the road towards Coral Bay can be found the Tomb of the Kings
(shown opposite) dating from the 3rd century BC. There are the
Ethnographic, Archaeological and Byzantine Museums in Paphos old
town. Paphos has numerous old churches including
Panagia Theoskepasti and the Church of Agia Kyriaki. In addition to
the historic sites there is also the Paphos aquarium. There are
also boat trips out of Paphos Harbour including a glass bottom boat. |

Heading west from Paphos
Following the coast towards Coral Bay and Lara are the
beaches of Coral Bay. As you travel further west there are the
Kantarkasti or Pegi Sea Caves which can be visited by boat. The
Gorge at Avakas (shown opposite), with its raised cliffs and beach
at the entrance. Finally there are the Turtle Hatcheries at Lara,
before arriving at the southern end of Akamas Peninsular. At Pegia a
few kms inland from Coral Bay can be found Agios Georgios Basilica
and the fountains of Pegia, two early Christian basilica with
mosaic floors.
North -west from Paphos
Heading north to the coast can be found more beaches at Polis
and Latchi, passing the Reptile Museum at Skoulli. Following the
coast along the northern edge brings you to the Baths of Aphrodite,
the start of three nature trails along the northern edge of the
Akamas Peninsular.

east from Paphos
Following the old coast road towards Limassol is the Sanctuary of Aphrodite at Kouklia, the Lusigan Manor House, Museum
and Church of Katholiki. Nearby is Petra tou Romiou which in Greek
mythology is the traditional birth place of
Venus.
As you pass through the Western Sovereign base area, you will find
the Stadium of Kourio, the Sanctuary of Apollo and the Kourio
archaeological site (shown opposite) containing the Kourio theatre
and the Houses of Gladiators, Eustolios and Achilles. Below the
cliffs is the Kourio beach. Further east can be found Kolossi castle
(shown below).

At Limassol Ladies Mile Beach faces into Akrotiri
Bay, stretching from the edge of the town up to RAF Akrotiri, behind
which is the large salt water lake at Akrotiri, with its flocks of
pink Flamingos. Limassol has a number of large shops and its
medieval castle. There are Archaeological, Folk Art and Reptile
Museums. Travelling further east along the beach front of Limassol
up to Amathous is another archaeological site containing the Temple
of Apollo, Agora and Basilica. As you travel towards Larnaca there
is the beautiful Governor's beach. At Larnaca the Hala Sultan Tekke
on the banks of the Larnaca salt lake, which also has flocks of pink
Flamingos. Also at Larnaca, in addition to its Archaeological,
Pierides and Natural History museums, is the Larnaca fort and
Kamares Aqueduct. There are a number of historic sites in and around
Nicosia.

from Paphos
Travelling north from Paphos you enter an upland area with many
small rural villages. The highest point of the Troodos Mountains is Mount Olympus
at 1952m. Its ski chair runs through the
village of Troodos, famous for its lace. There are four nature
trails, of varying lengths, in the area. A drive through the Paphos
forest and Cedar Valley, progresses through attractive forest valleys.
