Birds
Cyprus is the third largest
island in the Mediterranean and covers an area of 9250 sq kms. It
is situated at the easternmost part of the Mediterranean basin and right
in the middle of the migration routes for millions of birds which move
every year from Europe to Africa and Asia in autumn and back to Europe
in spring. Cyprus has a bird list of 374 species. This
includes two endemic species, the Cyprus Pied Wheatear
Oenanthe cypriaca and the Cyprus Warbler Sylvia melanothorax. In
addition there are four endemic subspecies: - Cyprus Scops Owl Otus
scops cyprius, Coal Tit Parus ater cypriotes, Short-toed
Treecreeper Certhia brachydactyla dorotheae
and Jay Garrulus glandarius glaszneri.

A number of good birding sites can be found around Paphos, primarily
at the Headland/Lighthouse areas, Asprokremnos Dam & Pools,
Dhiarizos Valley, with the Akritori area less than an hour away by car.
During your visit you will see a lot of birds common to the
eastern Mediterranean, and due to its location, Cyprus also offers
the rarity hunter good opportunities to find rare or unusual birds
during migration periods. A full list of species seen and other

Butterflies
53 species of Butterfly have been recorded in Cyprus, with the
Paphos Blue Glaucopsyche paphos, Cyprus Grayling Hipparchia
cypriensis and Cyprus Meadow Brown Maniola cypricola,
being endemic species. There are also 6 endemic sub-species found on
the Island, Eastern Festoon Zerynthia cerisyi cypria, Levantine
Leopard Cigaritis acama cypriaca, Eastern Rock Grayling Hipparchia
syriaca cypriaca, Chazara briseis larnacana, White-banded
Grayling Pseudochazara anthelea acamanthis, and
Oriental Meadow Brown Hyponephele lupina cypriaca. Further

Other wildlife
For those interested in insects there are also
many Moths that can be found on the Island. These are
undoubtedly under recorded. A variety of other insects species can
also be commonly found.
Cyprus has some 8 species of land mammals, including
Cyprus moufflon (Ovis orientalis ophion), a rare type of wild sheep
that can only be found in Cyprus and the endemic Cyprus
Spiny Mouse (Acomys nesiotes). 16 species of bats
|
| have been recorded
in Cyprus. The Monk Seal no longer breeds in Cyprus, but may
still be seen. There is also the rare Dolphin or Whale
sighting.
There are 26 species of amphibians and reptiles, including
nesting Green and Loggerhead Turtles. There are two poisonous
snakes, the Blunt-nosed Viper and Montpelier
Snake.
Cyprus has 127 endemic flower varieties, growing no where else in the world. With approximately
1,800 species and subspecies of flowering plants, Cyprus, is an
extremely interesting place and has all the attributes, which make
it a botanist's paradise.
The coastal waters of the island give shelter to 197 fish
species and various species of crabs, sponges and echinoderma.
