I am very fond of this picture. I think it nicely captures the gracefulness of a Fulmar in flight. It is also one of the first pictures that I took of a bird in flight and I was to a large degree pointing the camera, releasing the shutter and hoping for the best.

I took the picture whilst on holiday in Seahouses in Northumbria in April 2007. Seahouses is a fishing village and is also the port from which trips to the Farne Islands are made.

Whenever my wife looks at this picture her first comment is that I have missed off the tips of the wings, which was not intentional. I do not think that this detracts from the picture although others may disagree.

I used my Nikon D80 with 80-400mm VR lens set to 340mm and shot hand-held with f11 at 1/640 (ISO 200).  I was shooting from a low cliff-top beside a golf course and although it was my first attempt I obtained several flight shots that I was quite pleased with, mostly of Kittiwakes
