I
was commissioned to make a large Windsor chair.
There were several problems not least the amount of
wood required. It was twice the size of a conventional
chair, needed eight times the amount of wood and would
therefore be eight times the weight.
Normally I would cleave the wood but here had to work with
cut timber. Normally I would bend the arm and back bow, but
that would not be possible. And Normally the seat would come from a
plank, but I was not going to find an oak plank big
enough. .
The problem then was that all this had to survive outside in
all weathers for at least 30 years. Only oak would do.
