Dent Walks
It used to be 5 times a year, now maybe just once, the most foolhardy members of the Branch take the train up the Settle-Carlisle Line to the South Lakeland district of Dentdale. The return train fare from Wakefield is very reasonable compared with normal main-line fares.
They walk down from the highest main-line station in Britain and along the valley bottom to the actual village of Dent. It's at least 4½ miles each way, and they always go along the S. side of the dale whilst returning along the N. side. Always, too, lunch is in the Dent Brewery's pub, the Sun Inn, one of the most photographed and painted pubs in Britain.
A wonderful amble in the style of Compo and Cleggy with a gently undulating stroll back, keeping close to the pools, rapids and gorges of the River Dent and several picturesque Dales hamlets, but then ... after 6 or 7 pints ( and you did finish off wi' t'Owd Tup, didn't you?) you have something worse than the North Face of the Eiger to scale, before dying quietly in the station waiting room. It used to be that the party would break its journey at Settle for a couple of hours' relief in the Golden Lion Hotel, but latterly the stop has been made at Keighley for fish & chips washed down with a few more local beers. As you attempt to rise from you train seat at Keighley you may find that those bony appendages dangling from your hips don't appear to have any actual function, so hang on to something. To find out when the next Dent Walk is ring George Denton on 01924 256612. If you really can't manage the climb back, or you stay too long at the pub, there is a minibus service from Dent Village on Saturday afternoons ( at the time of this write-up departing at 15.15, picking up in Cowgill at 15.28: http://www.cumbria.gov.uk/elibrary/view.asp?ID=4125 )
