DRINKING IN WAKEFIELD (for the over-18’s)
You’ve no doubt heard of Wakefield’s famous Westgate Run. If you have time to spend in the City and you actually enjoy the taste of real beer in unhurried surroundings, we’ve put together a more congenial amble taking in most of the City’s best pubs which share your philosophy on decent ale. If you look at the map, it’s virtually a circuit, so start where you like—you probably won’t get all the way round in one session as it’s too good to rush! So Good Luck and Good Drinking!
From Light Waves and go under the subway and turn left skirting the Bus Station. Turn right at the big roundabout and left at the little one. Follow the road round a right-hand bend to the Red Shed (Wakefield Labour Club) which is 300 yard on your left. Turn left on leaving the Shed, follow the road round to the right & turn left into Kirkgate, the Six Chimneys (Wetherspoons ) is 100 yards on your left. Turn left from the Six Chimneys & a couple of hundred yards down is the Harewood Arms (Tetley Bitter & Taylor’s Landlord), cross the road and continue down Kirkgate to the roundabout, Fernandes Brewery Tap (now owned by Ossett Brewery but still brewing), is in Avison Yard on your right just after the Indian Takeaway. From Fernandes turn right to Kirkgate, then left to the traffic lights at the end of George Street, where you turn left. Cross over the road and after about 400 yards go straight on at the at the lights. Follow the road round to the right & up the hill, cross over the road & you will find Harry’s Bar at the back of the car park at the top of the hill on your left. After Harry’s Bar turn left & walk through the arch in front of you & turn left down Westgate. Cross over the road, under the railway bridge and Clark’s Brewery’s Henry Boon’s is on your right. If you’re going to stick to the trail turn right on leaving Henry Boons & proceed down Westgate. The Redoubt (Tetley Dark Mild & Bitter, Taylor’s Landlord), the furthest point for the intrepid drinkers among you is not far after the church on the Huddersfield road. On leaving the Redoubt cross the road and turn left, past the fish & chip shop and after about 400 yards you will come to the Wagon. Turn right on leaving the Wagon to the top Westgate. Walk to the left of the Yorkshire Bank and then 1st left up King Street for about 200 yards to the Inns of Court. On leaving the pub go back down King Street and turn left, then left again just before Barclays Bank into George & Crown Yard where you will find Elliotts Bar at No. 22. This is a Belgian-style bar with a range of 55 bottled & draught Belgian beers! Retrace your steps back down alley and turn left, at the Wood Street lights cross Westgate to the Black Rock (Tetley Bitter & a Guest Beer). Back across Westgate and turn right to the Bull Ring and turn left into Northgate where you will find the Talbot & Falcon 100 yards up on the opposite side of the road. Continue up Northgate to the roundabout and across the road you will see the last pub on the trail which is the College, from where it is a short walk back to Light Waves.
We hope you have enjoyed the Festival
and find this Ale Trail useful. There are other good pubs in Wakefield but
space precludes their inclusion. You can, of course, do the Trail in reverse or
even just visit the pubs of your choice.
