DRINKING IN WAKEFIELD (for the over-18’s)
You’ve no doubt heard of Wakefield’s famous Westgate Run. If you have time to spend in the City and you actually enjoy the taste of real beer in unhurried surroundings, we’ve put together a more congenial amble taking in most of the City’s best pubs which share your philosophy on decent ale. If you look at the map, it’s virtually a circuit, so start where you like—you probably won’t get all the way round in one session as it’s too good to rush! So Good Luck and Good Drinking!
From Light Waves cross carefully and go through or past the Bus Station to the Bull Ring with its new fountains. Go down the hill which is Westmoreland Street then left at the bottom by the international foodstore passing M & D Homebrew to the Red Shed (Wakefield Labour Club) where as a travelling beer fan you will be admitted. Turn left on leaving the Shed, follow the road round to the right and turn left into Kirkgate, the Six Chimneys (Wetherspoons ) is 100 yards on your left. Turn left from the Six Chimneys and a couple of hundred yards down is the Harewood Arms (Tetley Bitter & Taylor’s Landlord), cross the road and continue down Kirkgate to the roundabout, Fernandes Brewery Tap (now owned by Ossett Brewery but still brewing - and how!), is in Avison Yard on your right between an Indian Takeaway and Labour Ready. From Fernandes turn right to Kirkgate, then left to the traffic lights at the end of George Street, where you turn left. Cross over the road and after about 400 yards go straight on at the at the lights, not round by Gala Bingo. Next to the red brick of the Graziers is O'Donoghues which under enthusiastic new ownership is again a force to be reckoned with on the City's real ale scene, and should be having a festival of its own on the Friday and Saturday of ours plus a charity day on the Sunday following. Follow the road round to the right & up the hill, cross over the road & you will find Harry’s Bar at the back of the car park at the top of the hill on your left (this is more obvious than it sounds). After Harry’s Bar turn left and walk through the arch in front of you and turn left down Westgate. Cross over the road, under the railway bridge and Clark’s Brewery’s Henry Boon’s is on your right. If you’re going to stick to the trail turn right on leaving Henry Boons and proceed down Westgate. The Redoubt (Tetley Dark Mild & Bitter, Taylor’s Landlord), the furthest point for the intrepid drinkers among you is not far after the church on the Huddersfield road. On leaving the Redoubt cross the road and turn left, past the fish & chip shop. Two contrasting pubs worth a call are the shiny new Bar Street and the traditional White Hart. Back towards the city under the railway bridge opposite the entrance to Westgate Station is the fabulous tiled façade of the Elephant & Castle where magistrates' courts once sat but you can enjoy the traditional interior and guest ale. Yes, you're close to Harry's Bar again, but carry on up Westgate past Unity House behind which is a little cobbled street called Bank Street. Here you will find Ossett Brewery's exciting new bar, The Hop. From ther you should carry on to the top of Westgate. Walk to the left of the large boat-shaped block of buildings and then first left up King Street for about 200 yards to the Inns of Court. On leaving the pub go back down King Street and turn left, then left again just before Barclays Bank into George & Crown Yard where you will find Elliotts Bar at No. 22. This is a Belgian-style bar with a range of 55 bottled & draught Belgian beers! Retrace your steps back down alley and turn left, at the Wood Street lights cross Westgate to the Black Rock (Tetley Bitter & a Guest Beer). Back across Westgate and turn right to the Bull Ring and turn left into Northgate where you can step it out up Northgate to the roundabout and across the road you will see the last pub on the trail which is the College, from where it is a short walk back to Light Waves.
We hope you enjoy the Festival
and find this Ale Trail useful. There are other good pubs in Wakefield but
space precludes their inclusion. You can, of course, do the Trail in reverse or
even just visit the pubs of your choice.
