Earlier on Bowler Dessert Online Dave
Williamson recalled a
visit to Ron Brouwer's Laurel and Hardy
café/restaurant in the Haltestraat in
Zandvoort, Amsterdam's seaside resort.
We are very sorry to learn that there was a fire
in the building on Wednesday 6th August. You can
see pictures on the fireman's website.
Bram Reijnhoudt writes, "It might be a good idea
for collectors who have enjoyed Ron's food and beer
to make donations to renew his collection that
decorated the walls. "
Roger
Robinson adds, "It seems unbelievable that just
a few weeks ago many of us were enjoying the
ambiance, generosity and hospitality of Ron and his
staff at the restaurant. What an evening it was and
a great kick-off to the Laurel and Hardy fun we
were to experience at the Amsterdam Convention. Ron
is a great guy and the Laurel and Hardy restaurant
was a delightful and delicious place in which to
relax and dine. I know that we will all be thinking
of him and wish him well in the months ahead."
Grand Sheik Robert Radevan has been to see the
restaurant and says, "The damage is great. Half of
the restaurant has been burned out and the other
part is totally black! Also Ron can't use his
apartment on the first floor. One thing is sure.
The Laurel and Hardy Restaurant will reopen. But
Ron needs new Laurel and Hardy items. It will be
great if people donate some stuff."
Roger
says, "I am happy to co-ordinate from the UK Sons,
gathering and delivering some replacement items.
Without any prompting whatsoever, two Saps who have
big Laurel and Hardy collections (one of whom has
not been to the restaurant) have already offered to
donate items. I am sure that other Sons may also
wish to do the same."
If you want to say something to Ron, you can use
the guestbook on his website: http://laurelenhardy.mygb.nl.

I have volunteered to collate and deliver any
memorabilia that UK Sons may like to donate. I will
be at the Statue Unveling in Bishop Auckland on
30th August and also at the Laurel and HarDay on
6th September so Sons can personally give items to
me on those occasions.
Items can be also be posted to me. I will take
all donated items personally to the Netherlands
(date to be arranged, but logically this will be in
two or three months' time).
