The Fraternally Yours Tent of
Bristol reached a landmark on Monday 11th
February 2008 at the Civil Service Sports Club. To
celebrate the 100th meeting, Grand Sheik Peter
Andrews presented a programme of shorts. He
reports, "We showed, amongst others, The Music
Box and Helpmates and the audience
roared with laughter." The thirty-strong audience,
including half a dozen Saps at Sea Tent members,
led by Roger Robinson, thoroughly enjoyed this very
special evening.
There was a surprise for Peter when he received
a framed drawing of Laurel and Hardy, presented by
tent member Ken Harding in recognition for
arranging all the previous ninety-nine meetings and
for services to the tent. Roger says, "Peter has
been present for all but one of these Bristol
meetings and it was most appropriate that his hard
work and enthusiasm was recognised by some of
his members when he was presented with the original
caricature of Laurel and Hardy. Peter is to be
commended for doing such a brilliant job in the
West Country."
Peter recalls that he spotted a news article in
the local Evening Post in August 1992 by
Grand Sheik Steve Gore about a new Laurel Hardy
society being formed in Bristol. He remembers the
first Fraternally Yours Tent meeting, on a dark
night on 8th November, 1992, in Master's snooker
hall on Gloucester Road. In 1993 the tent changed
its meeting place to the Showboat pub, and in 1996
it moved to the Memorial Stadium on Filton Avenue.
This was the same year that Steve handed over the
reins to Peter and Peter has been sheiking ever
since. In October 2002 the tent moved to its
current venue, the Bristol Civil Service Sports
Club on Filton Avenue.
