A special family

The Saps at Sea Tent is delighted to congratulate members John Young and Sonia Richball on the birth of their third child. Their daughter, Laurel, and son Oliver now have little baby sister Lois, born on Friday 15th Feb, 2008. We are all naturally proud of our special Saps family. Hopefully a photo of the family will soon appear in The Perry Winkle.

Curry for Brats

On 25th February over thirty Brats congregated at the Lajawab Restaurant in Sheffield to attend their Annual Curry Night. The meal was a buffet of various authentic dishes cooked as specials by the chef, which were brought to each table to savour.

The food was delightful and in most cases was washed down with the odd bottle of Bradfield Farmers Pale Ale (and four cases were consumed on the night!). With background music provided via Ronnie Hazlehurst's The Music Box, and in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere, a great time was had by all. The staff even joined in with the loyal toasts and singalong, to add to the fun.

It was decided that the evening be renamed the "First" Brats Annual Curry Night of 2008! This means that I will be arranging a similar event for later in the year to which anyone will be welcome!

Comic condiments

When Antiques Roadshow visited Ulverston (BBC1, 10.02.08.) the owner of this ceramic Laurel and Hardy condiment set explained to expert Eric Knowles that it was owned, in the 1930s, by her grandmother. Eric said, "They're beautifully modelled and were made in Staffordshire by a good firm - Beswick. They fit very nicely on their stand."

Homes and Antiques magazine (February 2008) showed a picture of the set, with a note that Stan was born in Ulverston in 1890 and that the town has the Laurel and Hardy Museum.

John and So What?. . .

John de Santo will be coming to the UK Convention in Wigan this year. He tells us, "I will be bringing my third So, What?. . . comedy book, which is about the use of old cars in comedy films and the new Old Car Comedy Museum in Harlem, Georgia. Chris Coffey has asked me to talk about it on Saturday at the convention and I will bring some copies to sign, plus some of my first two So, What?. . . books, on Fin and The Others."

Hog Wild Tent AGM

At the AGM of the Hog Wild Tent on 4th March, Tony Hillman was reelected as Grand Sheik and committee members Tom Hutchinson, Joanne Moore and Richard Franklin were also reelected. Tony says, "With Gillian Wales, our Grand Vizier, due to retire from her post at the Town Hall, she declined to stand for reelection so Peter Jones, who had been Vice Vizier, was elected to be Grand Vizier."

Lookalikes for Amsterdam

American Laurel and Hardy lookalikes and impersonators Bill Leavy and Jamie MacKenna have accepted an invitation to attend the International Convention. Bill and Jamie are both alumni of Universal Studios in Florida, where they began performing together as Stan and Ollie. Together, they have over twenty years' experience of playing Hollywood's greatest comedy duo to delighted audiences from all over the globe.

Job Culture

Jonathan Hayward has been in contact with a production company from Liverpool and had an encouraging meeting with the main man involved, Philip Ettinger, in connection with his Job Culture film project.

But Jonathan has had some sad news about his father, John. "He has not been well recently and we have discovered that he has leukemia, which is a considerable blow. With the advances in medical technology, there is hope he can pull through, but things will not be easy. This will, of course, make me more determined to make Job Culture asap as much for Dad's sake as for my own; I still think we can all get there."

Good luck, John and Jonathan. We are thinking about you.

Hazlehurst's wine

Nick Rich tells us that you can buy Ronnie Hazlehurst's Last of the Summer Wine CD (released in 1997) from the website of the show's appreciation society, http://www.summer-wine.com. It is described thus: "From the first opening moments of the well-loved signature tune to the last lingering notes of the final track, the music will transport you on a voyage of musical images. To appreciate the CD you need to sit and simply listen, and I do mean listen, to each track to savour exactly what Ronnie is trying to say in his music."

John Burton spotted a racehorse running at Doncaster on 29th February called Classic Capers, trained by J H Jefferson who originates from Cumbria!
