I hope to write a book to
mark and to celebrate Stan Laurel's (and, of
course, his family's) association with the
North-East of England; I'm certain that there is
more to tell than has already been told. I envisage
doing the research in four sections: (a)
Arthur and Madge Jefferson's theatrical career in
County Durham, on Tyneside, and in Northumberland;
(b) Stan's early life, childhood and education at
Bishop Auckland and North Shields; (c) his early
stage career and visits to theatres in the
North-East before he became a film star; and
(d) his later visits to, and tours of, the region
in 1932, 1947 and the early 1950s with Oliver
Hardy. I have read the major biographies and
other reference books, and have checked the
relevant websites, but am looking for original
(preferably unpublished) materials (photographs,
letters, etc) and first-hand accounts to add real
colour and originality to such a work.
