I attended a meeting of the
Ulverston County Square Development group on
Thursday, 17th January. The purpose of the meeting
was to finalise the delivery, funding, project
management and timescales of the necessary work
planned to be completed for the redevelopment of
the County Square. An integral part, of course,
includes the siting of the Laurel and Hardy
statue.
As you all know, this has
been a long and frustrating process to get all the
funding (£500,000) in place and secure
agreement with all concerned parties as to how the
County Square will look after the
restoration.
The planned timescale for the
work is from January till March, 2009, with a
provisional unveiling being set for April, 2009.
The group will convene again in a few weeks time to
select final detail design options such as shape
and colour of the paving and other fixtures. The
statue of the Boys will be positioned (with its own
working street light) outside the Coronation Hall.
The traffic island currently in the square will be
reduced in size and the plan is to have a tree
planted in the centre. I, of course, suggested a
laurel.
I have been asked to supply
famous Laurel and Hardy quotations which can be
carved into the stonework surrounding the statue.
So can all interested parties get their thinking
caps on and send me their ideas for the quotes that
we want reproduced in the stonework by the
statue.
I have requested a small
plaque with the words "Presented to the people of
Ulverston by the Sons of the Desert", followed by a
few words describing our love for the Boys, but we
can think about the final wording later.
So, thinking caps on, recall
a few quotations you'd like to see by the
Boys.
Oh yes, and just one other
thing, we're still £10,290 short of the
£58,500 needed to pay for the statue, so
PLEASE, PLEASE keep on fund-raising. If you have
any questions or other issues (or funds) please
contact me.
