My tent decided on a fund raiser for the Statue
Appeal in order that we could join the 100 Club.
We hired the Woolton Picture House and
publicised a Laurel and Hardy film show in the
local press and local radio.
The show was planned for the afternoon of
14th June. We priced the tickets at
£3.50, hoping to attract a decent crowd with
100 people as our target. That would be enough
to pay the Picture House the £200 they wanted
and give us £150 for the Statue Appeal. I
made all the show tickets myself and it took two
days!
I spent the actual day of the
film show walking the streets of Woolton, handing
out flyers to every person who would take one. Then
I went for a sit-down and drink and a rest in
a local hostelry before the show.
Imagine my delight when I walked to the Picture
House and looked up the tiny street to see
it jammed with people. The show
was delayed in order to get all the people
seated! The final count was 179 people.
I asked one of the guys to hold a collection tin
for the Appeal as the people left the building.
The day was a great success. We had £77 in
the collection tin and along with the ticket sales
managed to bank £504.46p for the Statue
Appeal.
We earned our 100 Club membership and had a good
day too.
