Braithwaite is renowned for its walks. If you have spoken to a Lakeland walker for more than about ten minutes, you will have heard about Alfred Wainwright, and his famous illustrated descriptions of walks in the Lakes. Wainwright regarded the north-western Lakes, at the centre of which lies the village of Braithwaite, as the best part of Lakeland! At his request his ashes were actually scattered on the top of Haystacks, his favourite fell near here - if you are new to the area, you should make a pilgrimage to Haystacks (which is a great day out in any case).

Unless otherwise stated, the walks described below are circular, i.e., they finish where they start, without the need to re-trace your steps. If one of your party drives a car and doesn't want to walk, you can of course consider the linear walks described towards the end of the article. You can also take advantage of the excellent local bus services, details of which can be acquired from the Moot Hall, or from the Bus Station outside Booths' supermarket, both in Keswick about two miles from Braithwaite.

Except for the shortest walks you will need a map, for example the Harvey's one or the OS Outdoor Leisure map number 4 for the North West Lakes. Click here for a map of the Braithwaite area. You can zoom in on the map to your heart's content, or change its focus by clicking on where you want the centre point to be. If you want to print it out, right click on it to save it, then print it via an image viewer like Pixwizard.

All walks start from the upstream bridge in Braithwaite, unless otherwise stated. You have a choice of

10 Easy walks

23 Medium walks

23 Long walks

10 Linear walks

As you can see, if you are based in Braithwaite, you're spoilt for choice as far as walks are concerned. However, after staying here for about three years, I decided it might be nice, every so often, to see what the rest of Lakeland had to offer. So here are (not many, at this stage) walks which start more than 10 miles away from the village.
