Cambridge has been describes as the loveliest city in Britain - magnificent courtyards, the bridges and 'backs' along the River Cam and a great wealth of architectural styles.
The real growth of the City began over 900 years ago as a prospering trading route between Eastern and Central England and soon became established as a teaching centre for scholars from neighbouring monasteries. By the 13th century the University had been founded.
Peterhouse, the oldest college, was founded in 1284 and during the next 700 years others became established representing superb examples of medieval and later styles of architecture.
