As you walk up the High Street in Huntingdon, on your left is the Cromwell

Clinic, part of which was the former home of Oliver Cromwell born in 1599 .

A little way up on the right is The George Hotel, The Courtyard of which is

original and, as used by Cromwell and his soldiers.  Every year a

Shakespeare play is performed in this medieval courtyard.  On your left is

the Cromwell Museum formerly the school of Oliver Cromwell and 30 years

later Samuel Pepys.  Opposite is All Saints Church which contains the

Cromwell family burial vault.  We then come to the Market Square at the rear

of which is The Falcon, the headquarters and recruitment centre for

Cromwell.  We then go on a little further where you can see the house where

the poet William Cowper lived from 1765-7. 

Huntingdon has many amenities a Recreation Centre, Swimming Pool, Multiplex

Cinema, Restaurants, Country Park not to mention the River Ouse with Boats

for Hire, many interesting walks and many more interesting places to see

(but I think this is enough to wet your appetite.)

Godmanchester  Huntingdon and Godmanchester are separated by a medieval

bridge, here you will find St. Mary the Virgin Church built in 1623-5,

Island Hall built in 1749 which was requisitioned during the war for the

Women's Auxiliary Air Force and later by the Pathfinders as a airmen's mess.

It is now back in the hands for the Baumgartners' descendants.Tudor Farm

built in 1600-1603 a large timber framed house, major restoration work was

carried out in 1995.  The Town is mentioned in the Domesday Book in 1086

but had already existed for 3000 years.

 

St. Ives boasts one of the four remaining bridge chapels built in 1426 , it

is very pretty with  boats, swans and ducks in abundance and has many

pleasant eating places.

 

Houghton Mill is 10 minutes away, this is a National Trust working mill, the

only one on the River Ouse and which has been fully restored.

There are many great walks and a Tea Shop

for refreshments after.

 

Hinchingbrook House belonged to the Earls of Sandwich, one of whom told his

men to put the meat between the bread as he was too busy hunting to stop and

eat, thereby inventing the Sandwich.  The house is open for afternoon tea on

some Sundays and there is a Country park.  The Library here has stained

glass windows, each depicting a Birth, Death or Marriage and the staircase

is magnificent.

Buckden Towers - 13th Century Bishop of Lincolns Summer Palace where

Catherine of Aragon was imprisoned.

She was subsequently buried at Peterborough Cathedral.  Peterborough is 14

miles away and only 1 stop on the train.   The last  months of Katherine of

Aragons Life were spent at Kimbolton Castle, now a private School.

 

Wood Green Animal Shelter is 10 minutes away by car - there you can see dogs

and cats for re-homing, they also hold Dog and Cat shows, Antique and Craft

Fairs,Garden Shows, Toy Fairs, etc.  They have a Restaurant and Shop.

 

The delights of Cambridge are only 14 miles away where you can see Kings

College Chapel, The Bridge of Sighs, The Fitzwilliam Museum,  The Botanical

Gardens and many more delights.

 

Grafham Waters are approximately 10 miles away where they have Fishing,

Sailing, watersports, cycling and walking.

 

Ely  A small Town with an imposing Cathedral and related buildings.  Oliver

Cromwell's House, the Ely Museum which tells the story of The Fens being

drained making Ely an Island no longer, the stained glass museum.  The

Antiques Barn with 3 storey's where you will find all the childrens toys I

gave away years ago.  The River where you can take Boat Trips, or just walk

along the waterside and feed the Ducks.  This is a welcoming place no

parking fees!! and beautiful clean facilities.
