The Brecon Cathedral Singers

History

The Brecon Cathedral Singers was formed in 1966 by David Gedge MBE, and enjoyed a continuous period of development whilst building a large repertoire. After David Gedge’s retirement in the spring of 2007 the Singers now work under the direction of Mark Duthie, Organist and Choirmaster of Brecon Cathedral, and supported by Meirion Wynn Jones, assistant organist of Brecon Cathedral.

The Singers Rehearsing in the Cathedral

Although nearly all the singers are amateur musicians, and come from all walks of life, their aim is to maintain a high musical standard. Its repertoire is wide and varied, with sacred music extending from Renaissance polyphony to twentieth century composers. For major concerts the Singers are fortunate to be accompanied by an Orchestra and to have the support of professional soloists.

The Singers also perform concerts beyond Brecon and undertake concert tours, usually in the school half-term holidays, which provide a unique opportunity to sing in differing cathedrals, churches and other venues. On occasion the Singers participate in services held in Brecon Cathedral.
