Members Information

Brecon Cathedral Singers was founded in 1966 by David Gedge, MBE. In Sept. 2007 the post was taken over by Mark Duthie, Musical Director, Organist and Choirmaster at Brecon Cathedral. We are an undenominational amateur mixed voice choir and specialize in classical choral music.

It is customary to present two major concerts in Brecon Cathedral each year; a Passion or Mass on Holy Saturday and a concert including a major choral work on the second Saturday in July.

When feasible the Singers go on tour, often abroad. Participants pay their own expenses, and every effort is made to keep costs to a minimum greatly valued by all who take part, these tours, provide a unique opportunity to sing in differing cathedrals, churches and other venues.

On occasion, Singers participate in services held in Brecon Cathedral and in services and concerts elsewhere.

The Singers with their Musical Director warmly welcome new members and hope that they will greatly enjoy both the music and the company.

In exceptional circumstances and for a good and proper reason membership may be refused or terminated by the Committee or Musical Director.

Subscriptions

Every member is required to make a subscription at the beginning of January to the Subscription Secretary, Gordon Wilson

The minimum annual subscriptions are:-

Standard: £50 per annum

Senior Citizen: £35 per annum

Student: Free

Subscription for one term only - £30 (Senior Citizen - £20)

(At the discretion of the Subscription Secretary, in appropriate circumstances, Standard Subscriptions may be made in two instalments in January and in April.)

The Singers have charitable status; if you are a taxpayer and complete a simple Gift Aid form we can and will reclaim the standard tax which has been paid, presently 28p.for every £1 (£14 on a standard subscription). You are particularly asked to do this if possible.

Rehearsals

Rehearsals are held every Wednesday during school terms commencing at 7.15 pm. The Singers continually aim for professional standards and adequate rehearsal is essential. Participation in all concerts is at the discretion of the Musical Director and members are required to attend at least 75% of relevant rehearsals if they are to sing in a major concert.

Dress

Dress for concerts and church services unless otherwise advised, is:-

Ladies:- Long black skirt or trousers and a plain black top (no coloured trimmings).

Gentlemen:- Dark suit, white shirt and sober tie.

Music

In order to ensure that the correct edition is obtained, music should be ordered from the Music Officer, Beth Wainwright.

It is necessary to place orders in advance and important to note that payment is required when your music is collected. Cheques should be made payable to "Brecon Cathedral Singers".

Folders

The Singers standard folders are required for use at major concerts. These may be purchased from the Music Officer.

Fund Raising

Costs incurred by fees and expenses of soloists and orchestra are considerable. Although supported by various grants and the Cathedral Singers Patrons, a great effort has to be given to other fund raising and all members are asked to participate and give their support. Ideas and expertise regarding fund raising are always appreciated.

The major Fund Raising event is Christmas Cheer (also incorporating the Singers' Christmas Draw), held each year in December. A coffee morning is held at least once a year. Fund Raising is particularly enjoyable at Christmas time when music is taken to Pubs, Clubs and other venues!
