The Roland Tarver Observatory telescope ready for use

I was on holiday in North Devon in March 2005 and was fortunate enough to be able to arrange a visit to an observing session with the North Devon Astronomical Society. This telescope is housed in a large run-off shed under some of the darkest skies in the UK. It has a 20 inch mirror which gives it superb light gathering ability, and a step ladder is required to be able to view at most elevations! Once the roof has been rolled back, the Roland Tarver Telescope (a Dobsonian) is immediately ready for use. I was impressed at the knowledge of the sky that the members showed, being able to star-hop and identify each object. Occasionally they would refer to a star map, but most of the time the objects were found from memory.

The Roland Tarver Observatory telescope being put to bed

This picture shows the telescope being put to bed, and gives and idea of the scale of it's size. I thoroughly enjoyed my short time there, the members were very welcoming and I thank them very much for that. You can find their website at www.ndastros.org
