I was on holiday in North Devon in March 2005 and was fortunate enough to be able to arrange a visit to an observing session with the North Devon Astronomical Society. This telescope is housed in a large run-off shed under some of the darkest skies in the UK. It has a 20 inch mirror which gives it superb light gathering ability, and a step ladder is required to be able to view at most elevations! Once the roof has been rolled back, the Roland Tarver Telescope (a Dobsonian) is immediately ready for use. I was impressed at the knowledge of the sky that the members showed, being able to star-hop and identify each object. Occasionally they would refer to a star map, but most of the time the objects were found from memory. |

This picture shows the telescope being put to bed, and gives and idea of the scale of it's size. I thoroughly enjoyed my short time there, the members were very welcoming and I thank them very much for that. You can find their website at www.ndastros.org |
