An Apology :

Apologies for the crashes which the site still suffers occasionally. It sometimes exceeds the monthly bandwidth allowance on all our servers.

Note:  As the site gets so much traffic now (up to 20,000 hits a month) we rotate servers to keep our costs down. Hence you'll often see a Tiscali address displayed, as they host the reserve server.

We’re looking for any original 1950s/60s reel-to-reel tape recordings
or 33 rpm records featuring Jimmy Clitheroe. If you can help, please get in touch.

RADIO LANCS FEATURE

On 20th March 2005, there was a repeat of the 2003 BBC Radio Lancashire documentary about Jimmy, written and produced by Alec Makinson.

Whatever Happened to Jimmy Clitheroe features rare archive interviews given by Jimmy in the 1970s, clips from "The Clitheroe Kid", and interviews with people who knew him. This is the best documentary ever made about Jimmy !

HOW TICKLED AM I?

This documentary about Jimmy Clitheroe
was written and presented by Mark Radcliffe

It is a personal view, and incorporates errors
from the BBC's 1992 documentary about Jimmy,
so is NOT an accurate account of Jimmy's life!

It was broadcast on BBC Radio 4
on 13th April 1999

(which is still continuing).

Bob was a good friend of Danny, whom he’d known from childhood.
A lot of what's known of Danny’s early life is thanks to Bob.

Radio Repeats

Details of BBC Radio’s broadcasts

EDITED RECORDINGS
The original 13 shows broadcast on Radio 7 are the only unedited recordings of ‘The Clitheroe Kid’ held by the BBC. Due to requests from listeners for more shows, Radio 7 licensed the subsequent recordings from BBC Radio International (a division of BBC Worldwide); but Radio  International had edited these in the 1970’s, for overseas broadcast, so these editions only run 25 minutes.  More details here.

BBC Broadcasting Policy

Sound Archives

Radio 4 Extra is able to broadcast the 13 editions of ‘The Clitheroe Kid’ held in the BBC Sound Archives, but it can’t as easily broadcast the 28 editions held by BBC Worldwide.

For one thing, the Sound Archives are in the middle of a long-term project to restore all programmes which they hold. To make this cost-effective, priority is being given to programmes scheduled for broadcast on Radio 4 Extra.

Unfortunately this tends to restrict Radio 4 Extra’s choice of programmes to those held in the Sound Archives.

Budget -vs- Ratings

Another consideration is that BBC Worldwide is a commercial arm of the BBC. When it supplies programmes to Radio 4 Extra, it charges a fee.

Because Radio 4 Extra has a fixed budget, it's limited in the number of programmes (of all types) that it can acquire from Worldwide in any year. By comparison, there’s no cost to it to broadcast programmes from the Sound Archives.

How many Clitheroe Kid recordings Radio 4 Extra acquires from BBC Worldwide will depend on how popular the Clitheroe broadcasts are. They will only spend the money if the show is a ratings winner.

If you’ve enjoyed the repeats, let the BBC know !

BBC Worldwide still has additional episodes of the show
which have never been heard on Radio 7 or Radio 4 Extra !

RADIO DOCUMENTARY

All There With My Cough Drops
The Story of Jimmy Clitheroe
· Broadcast Tuesday June 10th, 2003 ·

Source: Daily Telegraph On 10th June 2003, BBC Radio 4 broadcast a half-hour feature about Jimmy Clitheroe, to mark the 30th anniversary of his death.

It explored his 1950s radio and Variety career, using rare sound recordings, including some never before broadcast.

Narrated by Brian Trueman, who played scouser Harry Whittle in the latter years of ‘The Clitheroe Kid’, it included an interview with the show’s producer and writer, James Casey.

Brian talked also to Jimmy's real life cousin, Irene Oxford, at the Jimmy Clitheroe Restaurant in Clitheroe, Lancs.

It was subsequently repeated on Radio 4 on 11th July 2004, and was heard most recently on Radio 7 on 18 November 2010.

The photograph, left, shows the cast of ‘The Clitheroe Kid’ in the days before Danny Ross joined the show. Pictured are (L to R) Diana Day, Peter Sinclair, Leonard Williams, Patricia Burke, and, in front, the kid himself, Jimmy Clitheroe.

ABC TELEVISION

There’s now another website dedicated to ABC Television, the ITV company which made Jimmy Clitheroe’s tv shows in the 1960s.

ABC closed in 1968, when the company became part of Thames TV. Its programme archive is held at Pinewood, but includes only eight of the 50-plus shows which Jimmy made with them.

OLD THEATRES OF THE MIDLANDS

The days of twice-nightly variety in the heart of England are recalled in a new book written by retired theatre journalist Terry Kirtland. 'Old Theatres of the Midlands' was launched at the Palace Theatre, Redditch in 2008 with a foreword by Britain’s King of Comedy, Ken Dodd, and an introduction by the Beverley Sisters.

Terry said, 'Sadly some of the theatres featured are no longer on the scene. But I have been able to include over 150 illustrations in the book'.

He presented Doddy with a picture of the Empire Theatre, Nottingham where the comedian made his first professional appearance. The book also has illustrations of The Theatre Royal, Bilston where Bruce Forsyth first trod the boards.

Supported by The Theatres Trust, the British Music Hall Society, and the Frank Matcham Society, 'Old Theatres of the Midlands' is only available direct from the author.

Further information is available on Terry's website at OldTheatres.co.uk

Terry is also publishing a new twice-yearly magazine, entitled "Old Theatres: The Theatregoer's Companion". The first issue was published in May '09, and featured the Nelson Palace and the Leeds City Varieties, two variety theatres at which Jimmy Clitheroe appeared.

The magazine is produced under the patronage of Ken Dodd. It features 'lost' theatres, old theatres which have been restored, and stories of artists’ experiences in them.

The magazine costs £6.66 (by cheque, payable to T G Kirtland), by mail order from him at 20 Rife Way, Felpham, Bognor Regis, West Sussex PO22 7BW. Full details at OldTheatres.co.uk
