Song and Dance in British films - from the recent (Love's Labour's Lost, Velvet Goldmine), Madonna in Evita with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, to Rocky Horror Picture Show, Julie Andrews in Victor/Victoria, The Beatles and the songs of John Lennon and Paul McCartney, Cliff Richard, back to Jessie Matthews and the early talkies - they're all here! This is the site for fans of musical movies with a British connection. The British Musical Movies website focuses on musical films made in Britain since 1929. These films help to record the changing styles of popular music in the 20th Century, from the 'elegance' of the 1930's (Jessie Matthews, Jack Buchanan - films located almost exclusively in Mayfair or Old Vienna), to the Lancashire stars, George Formby and Gracie Fields, to the big bands of the 1940's, to 1950's ballads and variety, 1960's pop, 1970's punk and so on. They are often the only surviving visual evidence that we have of particular performers at the peak of their careers. The term 'musical' is defined very broadly to include any feature film which contains song and or dance sequences, even if there is only one! Many of the films on these pages are hardly 'musicals' at all in the traditional sense of the word. 'British' means any film based or made in a British Studio, or even outside Britain, but with a British involvement in the performers or technical crew (Director of Photography etc). The film does not have to be set in Britain (hence 'Cabaret', 'Fiddler on The Roof' ). Some movies made in Hollywood with US crews ('My Fair Lady', 'Camelot', 'Doctor Doolittle', 'Star', 'Brigadoon') are included as they are set in the United Kingdom. These lists (especially for the 1930's and 1940's) are highly selective, as there were numerous minor films, especially comedies, that featured musical numbers. There are probably more British Musical Movies than you ever realised! Some titles listed will be familiar, but many others will be less so.... Some will be obscure, maybe deservedly so, maybe not. Come with us now on a voyage of discovery into the wonderful world of British Musical Movies.
