Summer Holiday is a happy story about the adventures of a gang of boys and girls who journey across Europe on a London Transport bus.
The film resolves around a group of young mechanics who turn a double decker bus into a hotel and take it across Europe. En route they meet a girls trio who's car breaks down on their way to Athens, and a young boy stowaway who turns out to be a girl. They all end up on the bus. The Stowaway is a young starlet desperate to escape from her clinging mother, who ends up chasing the bus across Europe.
The film Summer Holiday again was a big box-office success. The chart topping success of the film, soundtrack and singles convinced both the film industry and Cliff that this type of film is what his fans wanted.
The film contained elements that were to form the main ingredients of the next two Cliff musicals - Exotic locations and adventurous occupations.
The songs were a crucial part of his cinematic output in the 60s, being both to advance the plot and throw light on the characters.
The filming took place in May and June 1962. It was shot in five countries and took about 3000 miles of travel.
The premiere of Summer Holiday was on January 10, 1963 simultaneously in South Africa and London. In London the premiere was at the Odeon, Leicester Square. Cliff and his entourage were due to arrive at the cinema in a London Transport bus, as in the film, but the square was so full that Cliff was advised to come by car. But even arriving in a black Cadillac was in the event out of the question because of the crowds. Cliff ended up watching television in managers Peter Gormley's flat. But at least he made it to the party after the film in the London's Dorchester hotel.
