| Hinderwell is a great base for walking, bird watching, sightseeing, photography and just general relaxation. There are lots of walks that you can do straight from the house - whether you like walking in wooded valleys, alongside shaded streams, along the clifftops or on the foreshore (but always be careful to check tide times). The Cleveland Way footpath runs along the clifftop at Port Mulgrave, just ¾ of a mile from Hinderwell and you can walk as much or as little as you like - if you fancy a long walk along the clifftops you can always catch the X56 (Whitby to Middlesbrough) bus back to Hinderwell. The photograph in the above website banner was taken from the beach at Port Mulgrave just after dawn. The walk down to the beach involves many steep, uneven steps and can be very slippery - it is definitely not recommended for the unfit or those with mobility difficulties. Runswick Bay, Sandsend and Saltburn-by-the-Sea, however, all offer good alternatives with fairly easy access to the beach as you can park nearby. Robin Hood's Bay is also within easy reach (approximately 10 miles south) but again involves a steep walk down to the Bay. If you fancy a day out there are lots of visitor attractions within easy reach - including the North Yorkshire Moors Railway (which runs between Grosmont and Pickering), the Moors Visitor Centre at Danby, all of Whitby's attractions (the Abbey, harbour, fishing trips, the Dracula Experience, the Captain Cook Museum, Pannet Park Museum and Art Gallery), the pier and vast expanse of beach at Saltburn-by-the-sea, the Tom Leonard Mining Museum at Skinningrove, Scaling Dam reservoir (good for bird watching). Slightly further afield but still within easy reach are Scarborough (with its Sea-Life Centre) and Dalby Forest (with lots of walks, cycle trails and mountain bike hire).
