Merrow 1 Salfords FC 1
Salfords win 6-5 on penalties after extra time.
Saturday s cup clash between home side Merrow and Salfords FC turned into quite an epic battle. Salfords took the game by storm in the first forty –five minutes. A strong performance from Castle, Bull and Ollie O Boyle in the mid field made life for Merrow very difficult. The break through came when converted full back come centre forward Danny Lippet latched onto a through ball and having left his markers in his wake fired Salfords into the lead .
One up at the break and in control, but the second half saw a determined Merrow come back with a vengeance, constant pressure earned them the equaliser and to make matters worse Salfords Castle was sent off for a second bookable offence. From this point on Salfords dug deep and resolute defending from senior players Stratton, Robinson and Eastoe plus a fine stop from keeper Polley kept there hopes alive. The following 30 minutes of extra time was a nail biting affair but Salfords marshalled defence held strong. The resulting penalty shoot out saw Salford keeper Polley make a double stop on Merrows 5th penalty.thus giving them the edge. Again Lippet was on the mark to wrap the game up for Salfords. Manager Dave Basher must be well pleased with such determined performance from his team.
