MEMBERSHIP AND FEES 2009/10

MEMBERSHIP

The club has some 124 members from all walks of life. Due to the fact we are a self-help club we are able to keep our fees very reasonable. We are able to draw on a wide area of skills. To achieve this everyone is expected to be join in our work parties. These are held monthly, publicised on our Calendar, and Programme on this web site. We would expect all members to attend at least 4 work parties a year, and attend crane in events. Whilst we are predominately a sailing club we welcome owners of all types of craft, sailing, fishing, and motor cruisers. The emphasis is getting afloat. Applications for membership should be made to the Membership Secretary, however in the first instance applicants are encouraged to attend the Clubhouse on a Wednesday evening, or Sunday Dinner time when Officers of the Club are usually available to assist with enquiries.

We do not wish to put up barriers to anyone; we do want to encourage all people to come and enjoy safe boating!

TRAINING

We are frequently asked if we run training courses. We are unable to offer practical training courses but  we do offer some RYA theory courses. from time to time, such as RYA Day Skipper, ICC (International Helmsman Certificate), Radar, and DSC Vhf radio. Members are well advised to avail themselves of theory and practical courses if only at the basic level.  In addition we have some information sessions on such things as First Aid, Knots and Splices, Sails and Rigging etc. We try to include a list of possible activities in the members programme for each year. New Programme issued 1st February each year.

TRY A SAIL

During the sailing season we do try to have two or three open days where members make their boats available to take visitors or prospective members out to sample the waters. Other individual arrangements could possibly be made at other times. Just come to the Clubhouse on a Wednesday, Friday evening, or Sunday lunchtime and ask to speak to a Committee Member.

CRUISING

There are opportunities to explore further afield by joining cruises arranged during the season so that boats can travel in company. Our regular venues include Watchet, Minehead, Porlock, Watermouth, Ilfracombe, Swansea, Barry, Cardiff and Penarth for long weekend trips. We also venture further down channel to places such as Lundy Island, Padstow and Milford Haven and have been known to reach St Ives, the Isles of Scilly, and even Ireland!

Our moorings are on the River Brue and we have a good sailing area in front of the town, this is relatively protected by Steart Island from the rougher sea conditions beyond. Alternatively sailing south up the River Parrett which again can be much more sheltered, is very enjoyable. A more lively sail usually may be had by sailing out beyond Steart Island and into the wider expanse of Bridgewater Bay.

MOORINGS

Applications for permanent or seasonal berthing on the pontoons should in the first instance be addressed to Hon Secretary, David Humphrey, in writing. These will be kept on a waiting list and allocated on a first come first served basis. Certain inside berths have been reserved for members who are over 70 or with a disability, these are allocated on a seasonal basis, at the discretion of the management committee. Details of all available berthing can be obtained from the Pontoon Officer.

Applications for river moorings should be made on application forms kept in the Stop Gap/Clubhouse, further information on river moorings can be obtained from the Mooring Officer.

All moorings are allocated, and laid according to a club standard, responsibility for their laying, and annual inspection lies with the owner/member. By arrangement with the Mooring Officer moorings can be laid professionally.
