Another nice Wednesday evening with a good lively breeze coming from the South which gave some interesting wind over tide conditions, the course was memory testing and the racing keen as only 73 secs. separated all four boats on corrected time.

We had yet another fine Wednesday evening for the third and final race of the Linda Jane Cup. The course was set around our 3 favourite marks, the Island, No.2 and Madocks Slade, I have to say that it's our only 3 race marks, which we must do something about. Most boats did the 2 laps in around an hour. The same course has some times taken us double that time, this does have it's advantages with more Bar time. There was plenty of reaching and running with a good breeze. The final result was a close one

Race Result 9 August Westman's Cup

An early start with a beautiful morning, as the start time approached a breeze appeared but only a force 2 much to the dislike of the large boats.Starting with the tide made it difficult to stay the right side of the start line, it didn't help having a low Sun in your eyes making it almost impossible to see the white line mark on the Sea wall. After the Island mark we had a testing beat against the tide to No.2 which was also difficult to see, after rounding Maddocks Slade it was a pleasant reach. The second lap was much like the first. I bet the weather's not like this for the Regatta next week.

The O.O.D. started the race 30 mins. later than shown programme, and with only 1 lap Kudos flew round in 37 mins. now it must have been the new start time that confused an old buffer like me, I read the course as going round the other way, and also throught it was 2 laps.we hit the Island mark and had to do a 360. When I arrived back at the Compound and consulted the course I had read the 2 of Aug. as 2 laps and throught the first mark was Madocks Slade instead of the Island Buoy. I must get out more !! Still I did have fun with the chute but Geff Tanner would not let me get to windward.

Race Result 26 July Channing Cup

You would have thought that an early start, a forecast of wind and showers, black clouds chasing one another across the sky, would keep Club members in their beds, not on your nelly. Nine boats on the start line looking for the best start position to the first mark. Most of those boats found themselves together at the first mark which made it quite exciting. The run to the Maddocks Slade mark favoured the boats in the middle of the river, those close to the shore found it stressfull with the rising South wind bouncing off the sea wall.

For the second race in a row Freetime made a good start but went to pieces after the second mark, you must sort that sail out before the Regatta. Tarrantine is improving with every race, and is one of the regular racers now. The racing was quite close as the corrected times show, perhaps everyone is improving.

Race result 22 July  Linda Jane Cup Race 2

All day the wind had been at about a 5 with black clouds racing across the sky from the South, but as the start time of 19.00 hrs. arrived  it showed signs of relenting. With four and half boats on the start line, John Woodmans Freedom crew were having trouble taming that fully battened wing of their's with the result they didn't sail the correct course.  They may have been confused by the two boats that started on the one minute signal. French Leave and Rascal waited for the offical start. French Leave having put in a good performance on race one were keen not to upset the O.O.D. By he time we had completed the first lap the wind had decreased and the reefs were shaken out, and we finished the evening wondering what all the fuss was about.

Boat                             Corrected time               After 2 races the points are:-

1. Rascal                      4002                             1. Rascal          3/4 + 2 = 2 3/4

Race result 19 July  Linda Jane cup race 1.

Because of the Island swim taking place around the Town Jetty the race course was set down river to turn at the Combwich pylons. A strong south breeze and wind over tide conditions made the beat down river quite a challenge, on the beat across the

pool Tarrantine found a mud bank to sit on, but carried on after a short tea break. The return leg was a great sail on a broad reach most of the time, French Leave were in their element and did a stormer to come first on handicap. The swim was cancelled due no doubt to the weather, I wonder what it's like to swim in wind over tide conditions.?

Boat                 Corrected time

Race result  8 July Old Pier Tavern race 3

Some would say that it was a stiff breeze others might say otherwise. Wednesday evening saw 4 boats flying towards the Maddocks Slade mark as if Morrison's had every thing on offer. A beat to No.2 buoy which attracted some boats like a magnet, then a roller coaster surf ride to the Island buoy, we all enjoyed it so much we did a second lap.

Some races this season it's taken over 2 hours to complete this course, Old Rhodie finished the 2 laps in 52 and a half minutes

This was the last of 3 races for the Old Pier Tavern Cup the final result:-

1. Walrus 3 & 3 quarter points

2. Rascal 5 points

3. Old Rhodie 5 & 3 quarter points

4. French Leave 8 points

Having been lulled over the past few races that the wind would be light and friendly, it decided things would have to change.

I believe it was a S/E 4-5 but coming off the land made it quite variable, and we had wind over tide conditions for the first half of the race which made a bit choppy. A beat up to the first mark, the Island buoy which I don't think any boat made without a couple of tacks found most of us looking for water on a tricky gybe. The run to No. 2 buoy was exciting with a gybe to finish it off. Geff in Melody was in a fighting mood giving Old Rhodie and Walrus a run for their money. Once round Maddocks Slade buoy it was a tough beat to the island mark, Dreamer had made a bad start, but was now doing a stormer on the beat leg until the mast folded in too, things were soon under control but that was the end of the race for Dreamer.  The run up to No. 2 was made easier with the wind over tide disappearing on the second leg, but Geff had still managed to hold on to the big boats tails at the finish.

RACE RESULTS 28 June 2009 Gazette Trophy Race 1 (Best 2 of 3)

Eight boats started, and eight boats finished Sunday's race which turned out to be a testing and frustrating course, with an offshore wind the leg between the Island buoy and No. 2 proved to be the crucial leg. The freedom 21 had the answer with the fully battened main sail standing out like a big white wing which the rest of the fleet watched getting smaller by the minute. Starting two hours before high water also meant that the tide played a part with the smaller boats keeping close to the Island and the larger boats in deeper water against the tide. Many thanks to Bernard White our O.O.D. for the day. Race 2 is 5 July when Steve Fraser is the O.O.D.Arthur Pizzey
