A NEW CLASS of YACHT for BEWL?

On Saturday the 8th of May the club is hosting a demonstration (with the chance to participate) of a single handed, 2 sail yacht, for competitive sailing.

The yachts do not require any special clothing, no rescue boats,no life jackets, yachting cap, tie and deck shoes permitted, the minimum of physical effort required! They have an overall length of 550mm!.

More details can be found on www.rcyachts.org.uk  . Mike Weston the UK national champion will be bringing the demonstration yachts to Bewl and all interested should gather in the clubhouse at 10.00hrs, it is anticipated that the proceedings will last until 14.00hrs. All welcome, but participation dependent on numbers. It may be the start of a new class and a new membership?!!         .

Solo news - From the inside!
All the latest Solo goings on, from Martin Allen
  • Jim Hunt is now making sails under his own company, “HUNT”
  • He used a Dacron HUNT sail to win the Winter Championship.
  • North Sails have redesigned the Solo sail and the new Dacron and Kevlar sails have new designations.
  • The Kevlar is called the”ST1”, used to be the “T45”, not sure of the designation of the Dacron which used to be the SM8
  • The new Boon boat has had some minor alterations including a front bulkhead moved forward and some minor moulding alterations to the transom.
  • The new Winder used by our President, Mike Ball, was sporting a new mast which has a sleeve up to the hounds. Sound like it might be trying to work like a Wavelength.
  • I am informed that 111 new boats were registered in 2009 and the newest at Grafham was 5098.

NOBLE MARINE SOLO WINTER CHAMPIONSHIP

The Solo Winter Championship was held on Saturday 30th January 2010 at Grafham Water Sailing Club.

The day saw sub-zero temperatures and some of the main motorways shut with accidents. Even with this and the current financial climate 57 arrived to contest the event.

The wind was a steady force 3 to 4 and the race officer set to hold three races back to back and, with the finish line at the leeward mark, he turned round each start with as little waiting around as possible.

Race one had two general recalls and finally got away under a black flag which was then used for each subsequent start.

Each race was a three lap race with a triangle, sausage, triangle course.

A full set of results will be published in the Solo spring magazine due to be published in the next few weeks. Suffice to say that Jim Hunt was first overall for the second year running, Andy (Taxi) Davis was second and Charlie Cumbley was third.

The over 50s and over 60s contested their own contest along side the main event and this mini series will attract its own reward at the end of the season. Full details can be found on the Solo Association web site under the message section.

While I only went along to help the Solo Association the club was represented by Peter Edwards who having got himself stuck in a traffic jam on the M11 for some hours only arriving as the first start was taking place but with some speedy rigging he made the second and third races.

I will let him report his success.

All agreed it was a great day even if it was bitterly cold as usual.

New Years Resolution No.1 - More Sailing in 2010!

To get you all in the mood for the excellent sailing we shall no doubt have this year, we have arranged  a training day at Bewl for Sat 20th March and the Class Association will provide 2 coaches (Mike Ball and Godfrey Clark). The session is likely to be from 10.00 to 16.00 and we have the opportunity to run two parallel sessions with different levels of ability if necessary.

The day is free to paid up members of the Class Association and £35 to non members (as annual membership is only £18 pa this could be a good reason to join now!).

If you wish to attend you will need to fill in the application form and send it to Simon Jones at the Class Association (address at bottom of form) - can I also ask you to let me have a copy (by email, post or by hand!) so that we can keep track of who has signed up and what you want from the day.

If you want to discuss anything about the training day give me a ring.

Happy Sailing

Some of us go sailing to go racing, the two words being almost synonymous, others see racing as an extension to their sailing, a way of improving.  Many more do the occasional race or feel that they would like to start racing.  Each group has slightly differing needs.  To enable us to race our boats, someone has to organise the racing.

Race Management is the process that permits boats to race against each other.  It covers racing from the “last one back buys the beers”, through Club racing, open meetings and championships, to major events.  A friendly boat – vs. - boat challenge takes no organisational skills while Cowes Week takes a professional team 12 months in the planning and execution.  Happily Race Management at Club level is reasonably straightforward but it still requires a level of understanding by the Race Officer and his team to ensure that the racing provided is at the right standard for the competitors.  The hotshot racers, the competent majority and beginners all need be given racing that they can enjoy at their own level AND the Race Management team needs to enjoy themselves as well.  Race Management is only worth doing if it is fun!

Race Management will only be fun if:

  • The Race Officer and his deputy are knowledgeable and relaxed, confident that they can run the style of racing that is required that day and that they can deal with any issues that might arise during the day.

  • The assistants are fully briefed and understand what is expected of them.

  • Social aspects are not forgotten.  Some of the stories heard on the committee boat, and in the bar afterwards, could probably be published if we had no libel laws!

Race Management training and qualification is available at Bewl:

  • NO PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE IS NECESSARY for any course.

  • Assistant Race Officer Course (ARO) (not an RYA course but one developed for our AROs at BVSC).  It takes half a day or one evening and covers everything that you need to know before your first ARO duty.

  • Club Race Officer Course (CRO).  A club course following a RYA syllabus.  Normally this course takes one day or two evenings but we have combined a single evening in the classroom with one day on-water training.  An RYA attendance certificate is issued on completion.  Having completed this course you will have all the knowledge needed to be a useful deputy race officer and with a little help and mentoring by a more experienced RO should soon feel competent to run racing on your own with a good team.  This course is also an ideal refresher for existing race officers.

  • Even after this you can continue to learn.  There are courses helping you progress to Regional, National or International Race Officer and Regional and National Conferences to help you keep updated.

The social side tends to take care of itself (with the help of a little sloe gin ;-)

If you are interested in Race Management, at whatever level, do get in touch with me (Richard Kingsnorth) on 01622 8922254 or (preferably) by email richard@zwailing.co.uk.  In particular you might like to register for the CRO course that we will be running on Wednesday evening, 10th February 2010, with on the water training on one of the four following weekends, during the Spring Thaw Open Series.  An advertisement should be somewhere near this article.
