The "Cornwall Amateur Billiards and Snooker Association" has been in existence since before 1907, unfortunately, there are no known official records to substantiate when our Organisation was originally formed.
The earliest county competition that we have records for is the Senior Individual Billiards Championship that was competed for in 1910, but is thought to have commenced before 1900.
Without doubt Cornwall's greatest player and ambassador of the game has been Jonathon Barron of Mevagissey, 13 times Cornwall Snooker Champion, 3 times English Amateur Champion in 1970,1971 and 1972, and "World" Amateur Champion in 1970 from his beginnings at the age of 9 to the present day. Jonathon was the first player to record a 100 break on TV.
Notable achievements in Cornish Billiards & Snooker are impressive: BILLIARDS: The late Doug Thorncroft of Carharrack won the Individual Billiards Championship 18 times and was runner up 5 times.
Robert Thomas of Penzance held the Individual Billiards Championship for 16 years until April 1924 and retired from the event in 1927.
Charlie Gay of Redruth has won the Individual Billiards Championship 11 times and has been runner up three times.
Dave White of Bude has won the Individual Billiards Championship 8 times and runner up once.
SNOOKER: Jonathon Barron won the Individual Snooker Championship 13 times in 16 years between 1957/58--1972/73 those three years being won by Thorncroft (2) and Gay (1) and Jonathon was runner up once in 1972/73.
Jonathon also won the Snooker Pairs Championship on 13 occasions in consecutive years between 1957-1970 winning the last 9 times with Leighton Vercoe.
Charlie Gay of Redruth has won the Individual Snooker Championship 7 times and has been runner up three times.
Gary Bray of Redruth has won the Individual Snooker Championship 6 times and has been runner up once.
Gary has also won the Snooker Pairs Championship on 9 occasions with four different partners.
Doug Thorncroft of Carharrack won the Individual Snooker Championship 3 times and was runner up on nine occasions.
Doug Thorncroft held both the Individual Billiards & Snooker Championships at the same time doing this in 1957, 1963 and 1967.
Charlie Gay repeated the feat 1977 and now in 2007 Steve Downing has joined this very elite group of players.
Kevin Steed of Dobwalls has now won the Individual Snooker Championship 5 times and has been runner up twice between 1991-2009.
The highest breaks ever recorded in County competitions to date are: In Snooker 141 clearance. In October 2000 Paul Williams of the Godolphin Club Helston knocked in the highest break ever recorded in the Cornwall Billiards and Snooker Association's annual competitions - an outstanding total clearance of 141. In Billiards 201 break. A break of 201 was recorded by Charlie Gay (Redruth R.B.L.) was recorded on the 12th January 2000 at Probus Comrades Club in the County Individual Semi-Final surpassing Doug Thorncroft's old record of 189. That record had lasted for 32 years. In the County Final. Liskeard's Andy Hicks recorded a 104 break in the County Snooker Final in the 1989/90 season on his way to winning the Championship, the only time a 100+ break has been made in any County Snooker Final.
