Club Project - Building a 71/4 inch Gauge 0-6-0 Tank Engine
"Schmetterling"

This club project was completed in early 2005 and can be seen passenger
hauling on our ground level track.
The locomotive is based on the 'Romulus 0-4-0 design, but has been altered to 0-6-0.
Only cylinders, buffer couplers and chimney casting's have been purchased, the rest
(including the wheels) being fabricated by club members.

The name "Schmetterling", is German for 'Butterfly', which is in keeping with the clubs
' ****fly', naming.
The colour scheme etc. will be in keeping with one of the Ornstien & Koppel
Full Size Narrow Gauge Engines.

A lot of work has been done by individual club members in their own workshops
over the last few years and these pictures just illustrate the final assembly of the engine.

Schmetterling Frames
Having sprayed the frames, club member John is seen here tidying up the paint work by hand,
while Chairman Phil, gave moral support.

Workers at work
Dave, Phil & Tim assembling the cylinders,
if you think Phil, always has the same red top on, he says he has a lot of them,
as he purchased a 'gross' (144) at a car boot sale. The remarkable thing is,
they ALL have identical grease and paint stains in the same place.

Cylinders in Place
Both cylinders in place and connected.
Progress as of early January 2005.

On Sunday 6th February 2005, work on assembly of the engine had
reached a point where it could be run on 'Air', this enables various adjustments
to be made before fitting the boiler which restricts access to the cylinders.

Checking the Valves
Checking the valve positions.

Ready for Air Test
Adapting the steam inlet pipe to connect to the air supply.

Running on Air
Ready to run on air.

Between the 6th and 20th of February 2005, work progressed
on the frames and the boiler.

John with Boiler
Although some of the boiler components & fittings have been purchased,
a number have been made by members, including the square manifold unit
housing the valves which was made by John (seen here working on the boiler).

work will start on fitting the boiler to the frames.

By the second half of March 2005 work had progressed well, with the
boiler installed and the lagging and cladding fitted.
Boiler Fitted
Cladding being checked for correct alignment before adding the lagging.

Boiler with Cladding
Lagging and cladding completed.
The lagging is 3/16 sheet cork.

Fitting the Cab
Initial test fitting of the cab.

The picture below (taken by Bryan), shows even more progress on Schmetterling
and if the work continues at the same pace, she should be in steam within the next couple of months.
Phil with John
"No, it is not a trick of the light, or some computer magic", Phil really is wearing
a different sweat shirt.
It is rumored that is was purchased on E-bay, but some think it is the old red one dyed.

By the 10th of April work had started on piping up the engine.
Pipework being Fitted

By the 24th April, work had progressed to a point where Schmetterling was brought to the
track for initial testing and running in.
Engine and Driving Trolley
On the track for the first time and being introduced to its Driving Trolley/Wagon.
The wagon has been scratch built by club member Ron Manning and
includes a water tank to supply the engine.

Engine and Trolley Together
With the driving trolley coupled up, Danny is checking the driving position.

Towing on the Track
John is towing the engine and trolley around the track to 'run in' the
various moving components (axle bearings etc.) while Danny acts as additional 'Ballast'.

This test run showed up a few minor problems which will be quickly fixed and
it is hoped to have Schmetterling "in steam" on Sunday 1st May 2005.

In Steam
Sunday 1st May 2005, and Schmetterling has a Boiler Steam Test, which was successful.
Having had the test, various small jobs can be completed and then she
will be ready to run on the track.

The Tender
Another view of the tender/wagon, which has been specially built for Schmetterling.
The two rubber pipes are the water supply to the engine from the storage tank
built into the tender and the metal rod forms part of the engine/tender connecting linkage.

Ryan & Dean
Seen here set up with its tender, Schmetterling is a small but powerful engine and will be in
regular use passenger hauling on our ground level track.

Ready to Run
With construction virtually complete and having had a couple of test runs under steam, Schmetterling
ran officially for the first time on one of our Jubilee Year Celebration Days - 29th May 2005.

Ready for Passengers
Again on the 29th May 2005, waiting to load passengers.
